South Australian Government's Home Battery Scheme

From October this year, 40,000 South Australian households have had access to $100 million in State Government subsidies to pay for the installation of home battery systems.

The Scheme directly reduces electricity costs for the 40,000 households that would purchase a subsidized household energy storage system. In addition, the installation of these systems reduces demand on the network (especially at peak periods) and in turn lower prices for all South Australians.

Home Battery Scheme subsidy levels

Energy concession holder $600.00 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

All other households $500.00 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

While the subsidy varies depending on the size of the battery purchased, it is capped at a maximum of $6000.

While the Clean Energy Finance Corporation is offering $100 million in loans to help in the purchase of rooftop solar for those who don’t already have it, or who want to enlarge their current system, and to help with the battery purchase.

All the approved batteries in the scheme have to be able of participating in a virtual power plant – meaning that they can be linked and orchestrated by a third-party user to provide grid services – but there will be no requirement on individual households to participate in the scheme.

South Australia has systems on more than 230,000 rooftops which are already producing more power than overall demand. This further address urgency to participate in and develop storage energy sector.

With maximum $6000 rebate for up to 40,000 households to participate in, the availability is extremely limited!!

Case Study

Upfront Payment option:

Loan option:

Mr. Robinson is tight on cash when he is thinking about installing an energy storage system hence he goes with the loan option which requires no cash payment upfront and the annual repayment is about $2135 for 5 years. This option also allows standard maintenance and warranty.

Power Purchase Agreement option:

Mr. Robinson is saving up for his kids to go to college. PPA option allows him to have the solar and battery system with no upfront payment and 18cents for each kWh of electricity that is generated. He can buy out the system at a reasonable price within the contract period. The system will be fully taken care of within the leasing period. In case the leasing period terminates before the standard warranty, the standard warranty will still be applied.
